Different types of cheerleading

Recreational Cheerleading

Basket toss
Recreational cheerleading is typically teams that cheer for a variety of recreational sports. In some cases a rec cheer team does not cheer for a football or basketball team they will simply compete across the U.S.

The difference between all-star cheerleading and rec is All-star teams have their own cheer gym. Rec cheer teams practice out of multiple rec centers or they might have only one rec center where they practice.

All-star Cheerleading

All-star cheerleaders
All-star cheerleading is solely competitive cheerleading. Most all-star teams will not cheer for any other sport team. Some all-star cheerleaders are also on their local high school cheer squad to be able to cheer for other sport teams.

All-star cheerleaders compete across the U.S. but some travel outside of the U.S to compete. All-Star and competitive rec cheerleading are not to much different but in some cases the all-star cheer teams will look down on rec squads.

School cheerleading

Stunt groups
People start cheering at the age of 3. It is elementary cheer teams all the up to college level cheerleading teams. School cheerleading teams typical cheer for the different sport teams at their local school. Some high school cheer teams compete in their state, some also compete around the U.S.

Most school teams do not compete around the U.S. because of funds. High school cheerleading is fun and exciting because of late night football games and homecoming. Some school cheerleaders also cheer for a competitive rec team or on a all-star squad.

Is Cheerleading a Sport ?

Cheerleading is dangerous

Cheerleading is dangerous because people get thrown about 12 feet in the air. While stunting the cheerleaders on the ground have to make sure they protect the flyer because if she or he falls they can get severely hurt.

For example, my cheer coach was coaching another team and she had an incident where one of the stunt groups dropped the flyer and the flyer broke her collar bone. Cheerleading is fun, it can help you build better communication skills and teamwork.

Common injuries

Most cheerleaders experience one or more injuries. The cause of the injuries come from lifting people in stunts, and doing flips. Common injuries that me and my teammates faced were mainly ankle sprains and nose bleeds.

During a stunt my flyer fell on my nose, I was glad it was not broken. At competitions most teams always say a prayer before performing because anything can happen anyone an get hurt if something in the routine goes wrong.

Cheerleading is a sport

In high school football players would tease the cheerleading team saying cheerleading isn't a sport. We argued everyday about how cheerleading is a sport.

Cheerleaders deserve more respect than what is given to them because stunting and doing flips takes a lot of training, and technique that everyone can not do. Cheerleaders are athletes just as football players, baseball players, and basket ball players. Cheerleaders compete in competitions as well as cheer for the football players and the basketball teams.
